MINERAL WOOL 2017-09-21T08:52:07+00:00

Mineral Wool

Mineral Wool is composed of a unique highly specialised mineral fibre – spun by a special process from molten rock and slag having high silica and alumina values. The fibres are felted into felts (blankets) or boards and bonded into the various thicknesses and densities.

Thermal insulation of large ducts, vessels, boilers and high temperature plants. Particularly suitable for large curved or irregular shaped surfaces.

Technical Data

  • Walls.
  • Ducts.
  • Vessels.
  • Boilers.
  • High temperature plants.
  • Around machines.
  • Noise Screens.
  • Acoustic ceilings.

Has excellent sound absorption characteristics which will provide effective acoustic insulation where a reduction in noise levels is required.

Mineral wool provides effective acoustical insulation where there is a need to reduce noise levels from pipework or to absorb sound in other applications. Actual performance varies with thickness.

  • Does not smell.
  • Does not sustain vermin and will not encourage the growth of fungi, mould or bacteria.
  • Reduce heat loss/gain for energy conservation.
  • Controlling temperatures to preserve process conditions and/or prevent excess temperature drops.
  • Reduce surface temperatures for personnel protection.
  • Prevents choking and blocking of small bore pipes.
  • Non-combustible – tested to SABS 0177 Part V.
  • Chemically inert and when applied under controlled conditions would not promote or cause corrosion.
  • Excellent thermal resistance across a wide temperature range.
  • Prevents condensation formation inside or outside pipes and ducts.

Mineral Wool products are made from non-combustible mineral fibres containing inherently low levels of water leachable chlorides. Mineral Wool is “not classified as to carcinogenicity to humans”. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Rot-proof, odourless, does not sustain vermin and will not encourage the growth of fungi, mould or bacteria. Will not settle under vibration and is dimensionally stable under varying conditions of temperature and humidity.

  • Mineral wool can be considered as non-aggresive and also as non-corrosive, unless influenced by external factors.
  • Insulmatt typically contains less than 3ppm chloride.
  • Will not settle under vibrations.
  • Rot proof.
  • Dimensionally stable but care must be exercised to limit moisture ingress as this not only compromises the structural integrity, but also interferes with the thermal resistance properties of the product.

A) Insulmatt resin bonded mineral wool blanket stitched to a wire mesh with galvanised wire.
B) Insulfelt flexible resin bonded type blanket.
C) Insulboard semi rigid slabs ideal for flat surfaces. Often used as fire stopping barrier treated with intumescent paint.

  • Insulation Mattress: Galvanised wire backed fibrous blanket.
  • Insulation Boards: Semi-rigid fibrous panels.
  • Pre-formed Pipe sections: Rolled fibrous pipe insulation.
  • Loose Wool: Pure fibrous wool.

Mineral wool products are made from non-combustible mineral wool giving stable, fire safe materials suitable for a wide range of thermal, acoustic and fire protection applications up to continuous operating temperatures of 650°C.
