Sisalation

Sisalation is a light grammage, durable, double sided, reflective foil laminate incorporating layers of aluminium foil, high strength fire retardant Kraft paper and reinforcing scrim bonded together with low density polyethylene.

Technical Data

Sisalation is a double-sided reflective foil insulation which is economical for most applications using maximum 1500mm centre spacings and straining wires at 250mm spacing should be used. Sisalation is suitable for use as an under-roof and side cladding insulation membrane, with and without sprinklers in accordance with SANS 10400 Part T.

  • Sisalation has proved effective and beneficial in building in the comfort factor, keeping the home and workplace cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
  • R-Values (m².K)/W or thermal resistance is determined by the overall roofing or wall system design.
  • Keeping the building as dust free as possible can be an important factor in reducing allergens in the air we breathe, thus reducing allergy and asthma symptoms.
  • Sisalation prevents moisture being introduced into the ceiling by outside weather conditions such as rain, humidity or condensation.
  • Sisalation fire retardant products have been tested by Firelab and have a fire performance classification of B/B1/2/H&V-SP&USP – with and without sprinklers.
  • Easy to install Sisalation is maintenance free and long-lasting. Used as an exposed roof lining, lighting is greatly improved due to the foil’s high reflectivity.

Sisalation Reflective Foil Radiant Heat Barrier
Sisalation significantly resists radiant heat flow due to its reflectivity, low radiant heat absorption and low emissivity (ability to re-radiate heat). Installed in conjunction with an airspace, shiny foil surface is an excellent reflector of all long wave and radiant heat – as much as 95% of radiant heat is kept out. Additionally, it is a poor re-radiator of heat. Should it be heated or come into close or physical contact with a warm surface, it will only re-radiate about 5% of the heat, compared with approximately 90% that ordinary surfaces would radiate at the same temperature. Sisalation aluminium foil insulation is manufactured according to ISO 9002 quality systems and is a SABS approved product. It has two firsts behind its name – first to be awarded the SABS mark and first to produce a fire retardant product in South Africa.Tried and tested for over 4 decades, Sisalation has stood the test of time and maintained its position as a leader in the reflective foil insulation market. It is specified by builders, architects and quantity surveyors with confidence.

Sisalation Water Vapour Barrier, Dust-Proofer and Under Tile Wind/Airflow Retarder
Installed as an under tile membrane, Sisalation has the added benefit of being an insulator, dust-proofer, airflow retarder and water vapour barrier all in one replacing the need to install an under-tile waterproof membrane.

  • Sisalation, when used in conjunction with an airspace is an effective thermal insulating membrane due to the high reflectivity and low emissivity of its aluminium foil surfaces.
  • This combination makes an excellent barrier to heat flow via radiation.
  • When installed in industrial buildings as an exposed roof lining, the reflectivity of the ceiling is increased by up to 40%.
  • The superior fire retardant properties incorporated into Sisalation will satisfy most insurance requirements.

Sisalation on its own does not have an R-Value. The resistance value of Sisalation can only be calculated when the product is used as part of a roofing system, as all the various roofing components used in the structure including inside and outside air surface co-efficients must be taken into account when calculating the System Thermal Resistance (R-System Value) – Thermal Transmittance (U-value).

Sisalation used in conjunction with an appropriate level of bulk insulation will meet the requirements of SANS 10400-XA at a substantially reduced cost.

Reflective insulation materials work on a different concept than conventional bulk insulation like rigid foam boards or fibrous blankets. Unlike conventional bulk insulation, reflective insulation has very low emittance values “e-values” (typically 0.03, compared to 0.90 for most insulation) and that significantly reduces heat transfer by radiation.

In order to understand reflective insulation capabilities, one must be aware that the radiant heat rays of the sun do not become heat until they strike an object such as a home or everything that is in it. Thus, radiant heat rays must be kept out in warm weather; while in the cold weather, warmth must be kept in.
